Health care providers play a critical role in mobilizing the collaboration of both patients and their families and educational programs are one of the platforms used. However, it is important they the programs be effectively designed to meet the set patient health outcomes. The first step is identifying the target audience, which in this case are the patients and their families. The next step healthcare providers must undertake is to assess the understanding of educational health information of patients and their families in regards to health matters. This is one effective way of achieving the learning objectives.  Organizing sequentially the learning objectives also promotes making priorities. The objectives can be classified as problem –solving, principle learning, conceptual learning and factual learning.  The next step is designing learning techniques, which considers patients’ and families’ learning and communication styles. This ensures that the program meets all the educational needs of the audience.

            Fortunately, today technology has availed a wide variety of learning sources, which save time and energy including online learning modules and group forums. The next step is to establish the right timing as each patient has different recovery levels. It is therefore important to engage the patients and families when the patient is alert and active as this promotes understanding of information. As the learning process progresses the healthcare provider must consistently communicate and assess learning outcomes of both the patients and their families. This can be done by setting small but achievable goals thus encouraging full engagement and motivation. After all, “clear and measurable behavioral learning objectives are the foundation for planning an educational activity” (NH nurses, 2017, par.1).
