It is very important that we as nurses have cultural awareness. I agree with you that we need to understand our patient’s beliefs and values and we must not push our own beliefs and values to influence the patient. It is a very challenging task for healthcare workers to become culturally accepting because of the complicated interaction between the patient and the nurses own cultural beliefs (Edelman, Kudzma, Mandle, 2014). We can set our own beliefs aside and understand that we need to do what is right for the patient. I understand that this is not always the easiest task but understanding this and carrying out care that is culturally accepted by the patient makes for a better relationship with the patient and in my experience makes for a better patient outcome.
