However, I was reluctant to act on it. My name is Takeyce Taylor and this is where my journey began. In November of 2019, I came to the conclusion that I needed to lose excess belly fat. I struggled from within to convince myself that I needed to lose the weight. I was also having self esteem issues because I was also going through a breakup in my marriage, and I made food my best friend . I was always angry and upset that the world was staring at me. People would always stare with a look of disgust on their faces before they remembered to smile. I ate myself to a whopping 200 pounds and my body image was a barrier. I wouldn’t wear certain styles of clothing out of fear that my belly would protrude.I tried to avoid going into the public as much as possible. I realized that I became tired easily and my thighs would be rubbing together and that was painful as hell. Simple everyday chores were a struggle to me. For example, buckling my belt, putting on or taking off my shoes, getting dressed and standing or walking for long periods. Finding clothes that fit was also a struggle. I took the initiative to enrol in the gym and I got myself a personal trainer who helped to motivate me to make it to the gym at least twice per week. I was tired of being called fat, or being called a turtle or being reminded how I use to look when I got married. My first step was acknowledging that I was overweight and I would be a lot healthier if I was to lose the weight. I did some homework and investigated different exercise plans and healthier cooking tips and meal plans; like eating a high protein breakfast in the mornings, and avoiding sugary and fruit drinks. I started eating soluble fibres and drinking coffee or tea black. I ate weight loss-friendly foods like eggs, salmon, chicken breast, and green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach. I also ate mainly whole grain unprocessed foods like brown rice, oats, barley, and buckwheat. Finally, I drank more water and made sure to drink water a half hour before my meals and eat my food slowly to aid in my weight loss. The second step in losing the weight was to clear my house of all the junk foods that I had. There is a saying in Jamaican creole: “wha yeye nuh si, haat nuh leapâ€. The English translation for that is whatever my eyes don’t see won’t hurt me. I put my little twist to it in that whatever junk food I don’t see I will not eat so it won’t hurt me in the long run. So, I purchased more fruits and vegetables rather than carbohydrates (or carbs) which are hard to break down and harder to burn. I began eating healthier meals which helped facilitate the weight loss along with doing more exercise. Eating healthier meals keeps you from getting fat but exercising also allows you to lose the weight. My third step was reaching out to people who were going through a similar situation like mine. I was specific with the kind of help I needed to ensure my plan was a success. I was encouraged by my support group to get myself a Fitbit watch to help me count the calories I eat and burn I would also log my water and food intake daily. I also created a fitness program at work with the help of my supervisor to educate my coworkers on the benefits of exercising and eating healthy. I also noticed it has increased production and minimize the injury risk. Having less sick call in and I have learned a new skill in how to motivate myself. This motivation goes hand-in-hand with the self-talk I give myself and which has empowered me to this point. So, whenever I am in the gym, I work mainly on my stomach, my thighs, doing my squats and then my quads . There were many steps that were involved but the most important step was the commitment I made to myself and my determination to stick by it. I love the beach and bikinis are my thing. Having a beautiful well toned body was my goal. I currently sit at 180 pounds with my target goal being 160 pounds so I have 20 pounds to go within the next 3 months. I now believe that my body is like an engine, and that, if it receives the correct fuel it was designed to run on, I will be healthier and stronger. This belief has impacted my life in a positive way. I am more confident, I feel great, and I have more energy. What’s more, I feel beautiful inside and out, and I am no longer embarrassed to go out in the public. All of the physical, mental, emotional and environmental barriers are at a minimum and I am doing fabulous. I found myself a great guy who loves and appreciates me. |
