This assignment provides you with the opportunity to locate and evaluate appropriate sources for the final paper in this course. By submitting a list of initial research sources, you will be able to evaluate the availability of appropriate sources. Then, you will receive feedback from me to confirm that you have located quality sources and are headed in the right direction with your paper.
The sources included in this assignment must be reliable sources that are relevant to the main paper topic and appropriate for research in this graduate course in political science.
Types of sources to include for this assignment:
- One book (or chapter from a book) – in addition to course text
- Three scholarly journal articles
- Two articles/reports published by a governmental organization.
- One article/report published by a reputable non-governmental organization.
Prompt: Are parliamentary democracies with electoral systems (such as proportional representation) that encourage small parties better able than our own democracy to give a voice to the many interests that characterize our increasingly diverse national populations?
Some issues to consider are how the role of a Prime Minister differs from that of the American President and whether you believe parliamentary systems are more efficient or fairer than the congressional system used in the United States.
Step 1: Write a thesis statement that replies to the question prompted for the paper. Remember that this thesis statement will guide the development and support of your paper.

Step 3: After each source, include a summary that includes the main idea the source is presenting. Then reflect on the information you have gathered from the source and explain how the source fits into your overall research for this paper.
