Independent and dependent variables are terms used to describe properties of an experiment that are being tested and measured. Independent variables are the things that the experimenter controls, and dependent variables change as a result of the independent variable.
An independent variable is a variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables you are trying to measure (Helmenstine, A., 2019). For example, my EBP project will identify if the patients admitted to the ICU got an early assessment and intervention to prevent pressure injury. Assessing all of the patient population will give clear insight into identifying those at risk and those with lower risk.
A dependent variable is something that depends on other factors(Helmenstine, A., 2019). For example, if assessment and interventions were implemented what was the health status of their skin? This may be dependent on the Braden score, nutritional status, disease process and so on. This is important to understand because it changes what needs to be done to prevent pressure injuries from happening.

The two main variables in my evidence-based practice experiment are the patient nurse ratio (independent variable) and patient outcomes (dependent variable). To better understand, an independent variable is the variable that is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable (Burns & Grove, 2011). A dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured in a scientific experiment. The dependent variable is ‘dependent’ on the independent variable. As the experimenter changes the independent variable, the effect on the dependent variable is observed and recorded. In my case, it is essential to know the effect that one has on the other. The independent and dependent variables may be viewed in terms of cause and effect. If the independent variable is changed, then an effect is seen in the dependent variable (Grove, Gray, & Burns, 2015). Remember, the values of both variables may change in an experiment and are recorded. The difference is that the value of the independent variable is controlled by the experimenter, while the value of the dependent variable only changes in response to the independent variable.

In the evidence-based practice project, the independent variable is positioning devices. Position devices are the independent variable because it is the factor being changed. The dependent variable would be the development of pressure injuries. It is affected by the used of positioning devices. Something to also be considered is the proper use of the devices and current health status of the patient. These factors need to be taken into consideration as some patients are more prone to skin breakdown than others.
