- This next section will focus on the concept of Work-Life-Balance (WLB) and in particular the interplay between work engagement and stress which is now an aspect of career management that is a major concern. A recent article Link (Links to an external site.) discusses the current state of employee stress and burnout, and suggests a more proactive approach toward establishing work-life-balance.
- In addition, generational divisions within the workplace have collapsed to a large extent and have added a more complex challenge for many people as they try to manage their careers while at the same time trying to achieve a functional work life balance. This article does a great job in explaining the factors and impacts of working professionals who find themselves part of the “Sandwich Generation”: Link (Links to an external site.)
- This last article Link (Links to an external site.)is FYI only, and not required for this assignment but it goes into great detail of the factors to consider if you are part of the Sandwich Generation.
When considering career development, issues such as these are often not addressed until a work-life imbalance is experienced. As such, knowing the trends that are now shaping not only our career but the general satisfaction we have with that career is an important step towards being more effective in career decision making.
For this assignment, please complete the Work-Life Balance Survey located in the ‘Supplemental Material’ folder. You do not need to report the actual results. Instead, simply use the results as a guide when responding to the following:
1. What does “work-life balance†(WLB) mean to you? Please give specific examples or factors that you use to define your WLB self-concept and how you prioritize your WLB goals.
2. Consider the fit between your current work role and your life outside of work. Do you feel that there is sufficient balance? Please give some examples to illustrate your assessments.
3. In what ways does your current organization (or recent former organization) assist in maintaining a positive WLB? If there are no formal organizational support structures, then in what ways do you think WLB opportunities could be created?
4. Going forward, what specific steps (list at least 3) might you take to achieve or maintain a more positive WLB?
