7.3 – Group Discussion: 2011 Natural Disasters

Post a response to the following topic in your assigned group on this Discussion by midweek and respond to at least one of your peerâ€s post by the end of the module week.

Refer to the reading in Activity 7.1: The Year that Shook the Rich: A Review of Natural Disasters in 2011, by the Brookings Institution and discuss Natural Disasters.

Your instructor will divide the class into groups of 4-6 students each. Within each group, decide on a community/country/region as the focal point for your group to discuss the ideas about international natural disaster phenomena and response.

Some points to get you started in your discussions:

• Why are these catastrophic events on the rise, or are they?
• What regions are most at risk? And people most vulnerable?
  • For what natural event (hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, famine, drought, etc.)?
  • What makes this population most vulnerable? Is it associated with age? Economy? Infrastructure? Political issues?
• What capabilities do these countries/regions have for natural disaster planning/mitigation/response?
• What U.S. tools and agencies could be or should be implemented (i.e. NIMS, EOC, ICS, NDRF, NRF, FEMA) in these countries.
