There are many areas in the future that the contribution of research and ideas will continue to further and influence the growth of psychological and lifespan development. There are so many areas of which I would like to contribute it is hard to think about which one specifically I would like to pursue, based on my personal preference. Realistically, the topic will find me, the opportunity will present itself and it will all fall into place. At least I hope so.
Narcissism, or NPD, is a disorder developed over a lifespan. And it continues to worsen and the host becomes more skilled, better, at their abilities to manipulate and live below the radar. They can commit such tremendous profound evil of which others may not believe, even if you told them. In this case it is a personal reference. One of which I have had to deal with for most of my life and one of which led me to pursue psychology. I was the victim. Someone, whom was suppose to protect and love me unconditionally actually used me to hurt someone else, used me to make himself look good and in turn I was hurt. It was never clear why. Until, one day when I finally sat down and began to research why this had happened to me. Many new terms and definitions became familiar to me. I understood why I had been treated that way and that it wasn’t necessarily the person but the disorder, they simply couldn’t help it. Well to the degree of which this person had been carrying on with this personality trait for a very long time.
My goal in the future would be to help individuals that have experienced what I have. To bring new ways to deal and identify the traits and the disorder that accompanies the extreme cases. One study has associated narcissism with a term they have called the “dark triad,” (Tran, U. S., Bertl, B., Kossmeier, M., Pietschnig, J., Stieger, S., & Voracek, M. (2018). It is Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. Their goal is to “define, measure, and describe antagonistic and malevolent personality traits in a unified model.” (Tran, U.S., 2018). With the goal to to identify these traits in interpersonal relationships can show just how important these traits are and what it means for those involved with someone that posses them. They use a method called the “five factor method, or hexaco factor,” which is used to determine traits such as jealousy, humility and honesty (Muris, Merckelbach, Otgaar, & Meijer, 2017; O’Boyle, Forsyth, Banks, Story, & White, 2015; Vize, Lynam, Collison, & Miller, 2016).
There is much need for this type of research as many individuals experience or deal with this in the workplace or in their intimate relationships. Basically, if it is “evil” there is a need to understand it and perhaps derive a way to identify it and correct. After all our jails aren’t getting any emptier. This research can develop better plans for recovery and so that victims don’t become victim. Rather than to let it get to the point where victimization occurs. So not only is it responsible it is our duty is to contribute to the social and economic justice through research (Russell, S. T., 2015).
