I. Introduction
A. Historical Context – Civil War
1. The Civil War (1861-1865) occured in the United States between the North and South thereafter the election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Lincoln had an intention of putting an end to slavery of the African Americans.The Southern states were informed of this intention and did not agree with the end of slavery, fearing this they fought in a war with the North side. Concluding with this war the South and North side separated into their own unions. A total of 11 Southern states left the union and formed their own country to keep and protect the continuation of slavery. (New York Times)
B. Argument/thesis statement
1. The Emancipation Proclamation became effective in January of 1863 issued by President Abraham Lincoln in order to free those who were enslaved in the states and to authorize and allow the African American to join the military. In March the congress came to an agreement to pass the Conscription Act and therefore allowing the first military draft with the black soldiers that took place in New York City in July of 1863. 2. The Emancipation Proclamation was had a great deal of importance because it gave African Americans the opportunity to be recruited and enlist in the Union Army. It was also significant in that it allowed those were enslaved of up to 3.5 million African Americans to be free, weakening the Confederacy.
II. African American Union Soldiers
A. Union death toll and reinforcements
1. The deadliest war fought in America resulted in Roughly about 620,000 soldiers died during the Civil War with millions injured as well. (History)
B. “Slaves in a state of rebellion”
1.The 11 Southern States who were against the emancipation of slaves separated into their own union and countries to keep the slaves.
C. Pay and treatment
- During the civil war, treatment for the wounded was actually helpful. According to Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings of Dallas, Texas, they were treated decently. They developed an ambulance system for the sick and wounded and also established large general hospital during the civil war.
III. Freeing Slaves as War Strategy
A. Point 1
1. One reason Abraham Lincoln was wanting to free the slaves was to allow the African American to recruit into the U.S military.
B. Point 2
1. Another reason President Lincoln freed the slaves was to have more power for himself, besides having a bigger military it also allowed him to have more support by the people that he freed.
IV. Politics and the 13th Amendment
A. Point 1
1. The 13th amendment practically abolished slavery
B. Point 2
1. The 13th amendment also banned involuntary servitude
C. Point 3
1. The 13th did allow slavery as punishment for crime.
V. Conclusion
A. Overall, the civil war was the deadliest war that the United States that occured in over 10,000 cities and locations. Over 2.4 million people died. Overall the election of Abraham Lincoln caused this war because the North and South side did not agree with the terms Lincoln wanted.
B. Restate argument/thesis statement
The Civil War helped free the African American slaves, although it caused the South and North to seperate it gave them freedom.
