Assignment requirements:
1. Choose a sports topic: athletes, sports teams, coaches, clubs…
2. Choose an event or fact (Even the team or the players themselves) that is relevant to your chosen goal.
3. Express your thoughts about the event and the theories that support your thoughts.
4. Conclusion: summarize the incident or your views and what should be done next.
5. No more than three pages.
Use the following checklist as you edit them:
Does the article express an opinion at the top?
Does it provide reasons with supporting evidence?
Is it logically organized with a beginning, a middle and an end?
Does the author sound knowledgeable on the subject?
Does the voice come across?
Is the tone conversational?
As you revise and edit your own drafts, try reading them aloud. Your columns should sound like you and your points of view should come across. They shouldn’t sound like rants, however. That’s a surefire way to turn off readers.
