PART A
Reading/Literacy specialists need to be able to plan, design, implement, and evaluate cross-curricular instruction to meet the content-specific literacy needs of secondary students. The instructional strategies for developing reading and writing across content areas must be responsive to the diversity of students.
There are many research-based instructional strategies that support reading and writing in the content areas. Based on your discussion with your mentor teacher in Topic 2, use the identified standard and skill and plan a cross-curricular lesson that supports reading and writing for the students in your field experience classroom. This is the lesson you identified with your mentor teacher in Topic 2 and will teach in Topic 4 to a small group or whole class.
Include the following:
- A summary of the lesson, identifying the central focus.
- Specific learning objectives aligned to state or national standards from another content area, other than English.
- Multiple Means of Representation: Appropriate instructional strategies to differentiate instruction for diverse students across the content area.
- Multiple Means of Engagement: How the relationship between reading, writing, and language in the development of literacy skills is addressed and how the lesson encourages students to understand, question, and analyze standards-based content.
- Multiple Means of Expression: A developmentally appropriate assessment that aligns to the content area standards and measures the learning objectives.
Write a 250-500 word reflection on your experience explaining why you chose these instructional strategies and how you modified them to meet the needs of students or the content area. Explain how they are effective practices that support student learning and growth in reading and writing at all skill levels in the chosen content area. Describe how the chosen materials address cultural responsiveness and positively affect students’ knowledge, beliefs, and engagements with diversity.
Include 2-3 scholarly resources to support your instructional strategies as effective practices.
PART B
This is the amended Clinical Experience B.
Reading/Literacy specialists need to be able to evaluate instructional strategies to meet the content-specific literacy needs of secondary students. Student learning in reading and writing across content areas should include instructional practices that are responsive to the diversity of their students.
Allocate at least 3 hours in the field to support this field experience.
View a video from two different content areas concerning lesson unit plans. Please include the video links. Review any instructional approaches and instructional materials in the plans you believe develop each of the following:
- Reading comprehension
- Vocabulary
- Writing
- Critical thinking
Reflect on how and why teachers took these approaches and why certain materials were selected. Do you think there are any challenges the teachers faced when developing their lesson plans to include these areas of literacy.
Write a 250-500 word reflection based on your review of instructional approaches in the lesson plan.
Include the following:
- Summarize the instructional strategies and materials used to develop student literacy.
- Describe the challenges the teachers may face or possible challenges you see in the unit plan.
- Explain any cultural responsiveness and engage in instructional practices that positively affect students’ knowledge, beliefs, and engagement with the features of diversity.
- Describe how you will incorporate the experience gained from this field experience into your future professional practice.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
