Question 1:
he purpose of this activity is twofold. First, it will help you hone your library research skills so you can locate books and journal articles to support your written work. You should use this exercise to explore sources related to your Final Project. It is recommended that you select a source that you intend to use for the Final Project, which you can also use as a part of your Final Project Preparation assignment this week.
Second, it will help you focus on analyzing sources by writing annotations. What is an annotation? An annotation is a brief commentary on a scholarly book, chapter, journal article, or primary source that summarizes its central points and main argument. This activity will help you learn how to identify and explain an author’s thesis statement in the case of scholarly articles, chapters, and books. By developing an awareness of thesis statements in scholarly works, you will be better able to formulate thesis statements in your own work. In the case of primary sources, you will identify key elements of the source that will help you analyze its significance. Attention to significance will help you refine your critical thinking skills and construct arguments that support your thesis statements. This is a collective endeavor; everyone contributes by posting annotations to build an annotated bibliography that we can all draw from when developing our work.
For this activity, you will look for a primary source or scholarly secondary source that you will incorporate into your Final Project Preparation assignment this week and your Comparing and Contrasting Two Civilizations Final Project. Prior to doing starting your research and making your selection of a relevant source, reflect on what you have learned about primary, scholarly secondary and tertiary sources. Next, review the HIS103 Research Guide: Library Resources and Primary Sources. This resource will help you find appropriate sources for your written assignments. Another good place to look is among the supporting documentation that accompanies the civilization tours, which are found in the Recommended Resources area of each week.
For the content of your post, follow the guidelines for developing an annotation according to the Annotated Bibliography Builder Template, depending on your choice of either a scholarly secondary source or primary source.

What to Include in Your Article, Chapter, or Web Article Annotation:
Explain what makes your source scholarly: a. What do you know about the author? Do a google search on the author; find their biography at the place where they teach, look for their Curriculum Vitae (academic resume). What information establishes them as a credible expert on this topic?
What are some examples of scholarly sources that are referenced and cited in this article, chapter, or web article?
The work is scholarly as it is written by an expert in the field. The work has been published in a journal. The work is arguing a point. The author is a professor of history at the University of Leon in Spain. The author has been cited in over 60 papers. Among others, the author cites Guntram’s speech about Reccared, the Journal of Early Christian Studies and his own existing work.
In your own words, what is the author’s thesis or the central focus? What would you answer if you described what you read to someone, and then they asked “So what’s the point?â€
The author of the article discusses Constantine and how influential he was to others in the area for centuries. The author speaks about him as the gold standard and something other leaders aspired to.
List three main points the author makes to back up the thesis or central focus.
Much like Constantine, Clovis used religion to justify his position that the Arian religion was a threat and should be eradicated.
The story goes that Clovis turned to Christianity when he won a battle. Constantine did as well. The battle Clovis attributes his conversion to was not that important of battle in the scheme of the war and it seems more likely he just said this so people would draw the comparison between himself and Constantine.
Reccard, the king of the Visigoths, converted to Catholicism. But again as with Clovis, the story of the factors leading up to his conversion are skewed to lay the foundation of similarity between Reccard and Constantine.
Explain how the author uses each main point to back up the thesis or central focus.
He uses all of these points the same way. The idea is that these rulers were purposely looking for people to make comparisons between themselves and Constantine. Partially because of their admiration for Constantine, partially because they felt Constantine had almost become a symbol at that point.
What Final Project question will you answer?
This work will answer questions regarding religion and the Germanic people.
What specific part of your Final Project could this article or chapter support? Why?
This work will offer insight into the religion of the Germanic people. The work discusses where the Germanic people started with religion and how they arrived at where they ended up. The work discusses Clovis converting to have comparisons drawn between himself and Constantine.

Procopius, History of the Wars, I, xxiv, pp. 219-230, https://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/source/procop-wars…
What makes this a primary source?
The History of the Wars was written by Procopius of Caesarea around the year 545 CE.
In a sentence or two, what do we know about the author?
Procopius was born 500 CE and died somewhere around 570 CE, and he lived in the Eastern Roman Empire. Procopius was alive during the reign of Emperor Justinian. He was also a legal advisor to a military commander named Belisarius. Procopius also witnessed the Nika riots.
What do we know about the source? When, where, and why was it created? What type of source?
This source was written to document the campaigning events of Belisarius, Justinian’s general, throughout Africa, Italy, and Mesopotamia. Procopius traveled with Belisarius during these events so that he would have had firsthand knowledge. It would appear that this publication was meant to be directed to a broader audience and also meant for the public. History of the Wars was written so people would know the campaigning events that happened under Justinian’s rule.
Why is this source important?
Many things were happening during the time of this source. One of the more critical events documented in this piece was the Nika riots, which Procopius witnessed firsthand. This source would have had a significant impact on their society for the people that could have read History of the Wars. This would have given the people sight of what events were happening in the nation from a firsthand account.
What Final Project question will you answer?
I will use this source to answer the gender roles question.
What specific part of your Final Project could the primary source support, and Why?
This source has the firsthand account of Theodora telling Justinian not to flea and to stand his ground during the Nika riots. So in a sense, she helped Justinian keep his empire.
