here I have a simple journal below:

Critical Thinking Journal of “Fish Cheeksâ€
Summary: The story talks around the main character who is a American born chinese. She has a crush on the minister’s son named Robert who is a white kid. Her family invited robet’s family to celebrate christmas together with Chinese meals. In the beginning, she is afraid and a little ashamed of the Chinese culture and food. And obviously, Robert cannot understand the eating preference of Chinese people. Yet, her mom told her the importance of appreciating her own culture. And finally, when she grows up, she realizes that the words from her mother is an important lesson.
Author’s purpose: The author’s purpose of writing this story is to tell people from all over the world to look up to and appreciate their own culture. Even though it might look weird for other people, but following the culture and yourself is important.
Quotes: “I cried, what would Robert think of a shabby Chinese Christmas†(94). This quote shows that she is afraid that Robert will make fun of her and the way Chinese celebrate christmas.
“My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table†(95). These actions might seems impolite to Americans, but in Chinese cultures, it’s a action that shows family and love.
“I was able to fully appreciate her lesson and the true purpose behind our particular menu†(95). When she understands the world a little better, she realizes how valuable her own culture is.
Critical Analysis: This is one of my favourite stories throughout the semester because it is super meaningful. As a Chinese teenager, it is also important for me to realize and to be proud of my culture.
As you see, we need four parts in a journal, it’s summary, author’s purpose, 3 quotes and critical analysis. You don’t need to write too long, 5 sentence for each part will be enough.
I need two different version of this journal, they have to be totally different. One for me to submit, and another for my friend to submit. One page for each one. Thank you.
