answer 1 of the two questions
Pick one of the two questions and answer it.
It the first story, “Rip Van Winkle” many people see Rip as lazy and not industrious, put this is applying our ideology to another time, a very dangerous thing. The truth is that many people came to America, not to get rich, but to “get out from under.” Their American dream was to not have to struggle or work hard and enjoy their one life.
I. The first question for today has two parts. 1. Is Rip lazy or is he laid back. That is does he enjoy life (other than his wife) while other people toil away to become well off? 2. Is the past always better than the future or the future always better than the past?
II. “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” might be thought of as a type of allegory (look up the word). Thus each person and thing represents a “type.” Also the narrator is chiding us for being unable to imagine a perfect city or world and maybe telling us in our world there must be that child locked in the closet. First what does the child represent; what do other characters/things represent; and finally how does the story represent our world today?
