You will need to create a 7-10 source MLA format Annotated Bibliography. At least TWO of your sources need to be scholarly (scholarly journal article, book, etc.). Your annotated bibliography should be typed, double spaced and needs to include the following (approximately 1,500 words):
Section 1
Begin with a short introduction to your Annotated Bibliography where you:
Indicate what group, subculture, or culture you are researching, why you are interested in exploring this group, subculture, or culture, and why you think this group, subculture or culture is significant and complex in a broader sense (about 1 paragraph)
Section 2
Follow your introduction with the following:
An MLA format citation for each source–remember you sources need to be listed in alphabetical order with a hanging indent for the citation.
Following each citation, you need to do the following:

Introduce the article by title and author
Explain of why the source is credible–be specific here. You need to do more than say you found it in X database or journal so it is credible. In other words, provide some background on the author and source to identify perspective (i.e. what position does the author take), credentials (what makes this person an authority) etc.
Summarize the author’s main argument and key supporting points–be specific
Respond to what you find most interesting, significant, confusing, convincing (or least convincing), etc. and explain how the source helps you gain a better understanding of your question–what do you find most useful, what did you learn, etc.
I would aim for about 2-3 paragraphs here for each source.
Section 3
You will also need a conclusion (1-2 paragraphs) where you (note this is a separate section after you annotate each of your 7 sources):
Explain where you are now in your thinking (having engaged with the sources you annotated) about your group, subculture, or culture. What have you learned? What do you think is most significant and/or interesting about this group, subculture or culture? Why?
You will need to submit your MLA Annotated Bibliography by 11:59 pm on Sunday, 3/8 (Therefore, you will need to get started on this right away. We will be with meeting with a Reference Librarian on Thursday, 2/13 and will have some time to begin searching for sources in class, but you will have to do some of your searching outside of class.
NOTE: You need at least 7 sources to earn a passing grade (C) on this assignment (in other words, less than 7 sources will not earn a passing grade, but of course if your citations and annotations, etc. are good, you can earn an A or a B).. The idea here is to engage critically with these sources to provide greater breadth and depth for your research project.
Here is a basic “model/outline” you can use to format your Exploratory Annotated Bibliography:
Introduction (1-2 paragraphs)
Indicate what your research question is, why you are interested in exploring this question, and why you think this question is significant and complex in a broader sense (about 1 paragraph)
Annotations (at least 7 sources)
–MLA (8th edition) format citation for each source
–Annotation for each source–see above for what you need to include here (aim for at least 3 paragraphs per source)
Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs)
Explain where you are now in your thinking (having engaged with the sources you annotated) about your question. How has your thinking changed? What have you learned?
End your conclusion with some ideas/questions that you think you will need to explore as you engage in field research.
