When it comes to the factors that influence discretionary practices used by police when it comes to handling juvenile matters, it is very delicate situation. In many situations, police often work alone and do not have much supervision so when it comes to making discretionary decisions, the burden falls solely on them. When it comes to these decisions, a few factors need to be thought about carefully. These include if the situation needs an intervention at all, if a warning needs to be involved, or if an arrest needs to be made.
One of the ideas that was brought up in the early twentieth century was to introduce women into the police department. This was thought of since women seemed to have more of a special touch when it comes to children. When it comes to police officers and children, one goal is to attempt to keep children out of the juvenile justice system if at all possible. Incorrectly labeling a juvenile delinquent can do more harm than good.
“Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to eb obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak no evil of o one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. “ (Titus 3:1-2, ESV). Even though we are all called to be submissive to rulers and authorities, police officers need to realize that there interaction with the public, and more so with juveniles, will be a lot of times, determine how the public will interact with them.
