1. The Canaanites are well known from the biblical texts (, in which they are universally identified as amoral idolaters. But, the Canaanites of the Hebrew Bible are not the Canaanites of history. What resources are available to us in order to reconstruct the Canaanites of history? Where do the Israelites fits into this historical reconstruction of the Canaanites?

2. As you read through the Merneptah stele and the biblical passages (Joshua 1–6; Judges 1 ), how do these texts depict the origins of Israel? How does the picture of the Israelites in the Merneptah stele differ from the model found in the biblical books of Joshua and Judges? Why do you think these are so different?
