Can Somebody write this op-ed about something happening in Boulder?
Business Finance
Op-Ed./Memo Assignment
Among the many activities of successful people in business is taking an active part in local politics and civic affairs (therefore, “Writing for Business and Society”). Many successful people write op-eds on local, regional, or national matters, partly to promote the local business community, partly to demonstrate their expertise and knowledge on a subject, and partly because they are (and need to be) deeply committed to that community’s success. Similarly, business people often write memos to their local representatives about matters of concern to them or their business, community, or other issues.
For this assignment, you will have two choices:
Op-ed: You may write an op-ed piece on a local matter that relates to some community issue that matters to you. Your target publication is the Boulder Daily Camera, whose word limit is 750 words for this type of piece. Op-eds frequently appear opposite the editorials (hence, their names), and Boulder is rife with opinions. Your op-ed should be 500 (no less) – 750 (no more) words on a subject of your choice. It should be driven by facts and research, (meaning you should research the subject so you can educate your audience), not a rant, and demonstrate your knowledge in that area. Your writing will be both informative and persuasive – keep in mind that your audience is Boulder, meaning well-educated and highly opinionated.
Political memo: Using the examples on D2L, you may write a political memo to a local representative, urging a specific action of your choice. This choice of assignment follows a given format (see examples), and includes a recommendation, a vision statement, a progress statement, a statement of issues, suggested solutions, and concerns. Two pages, as per model.
Writing op-eds and memos can be at once highly empowering. This kind of writing repositions you as an active, knowledgeable contributor to the business community and the community at large – which is where you want to be.
