The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010 gave nurses new opportunities to deliver care and play an important role in leading the changes. It showed that nurses needed to do more to prevent disease; provide chronic care management to and aging, sicker, and diverse population; and offer comfort and compassionate end-of-life care. There were nine challenges that this brought forward to help make the changes to better the health care system. The few that I choose to talk about are technologies, developing leaders, and being at the table.
Embracing technology, we need to use the ever growing technologies of today. Using simulation labs in nursing curriculum and online classrooms to better prepare our nurses and make it more available. We need to continue to advance the Electronic medical records; this can be used to gain patient pertinent medical records from facility to facility. Also as nurses we need to have be at the table picking the best, user friendly, comprehensive technologies.
Being at the table and developing leadership can go together. We need to promote our nurses to be the leaders that they have been trained to be, whether this bee at the bedside or in the boardroom. Physicians and administrators must support the nurses in these efforts. We need to take that leadership to the table and to the boards to ensure that patient safety, quality of care, and access to health care. We need to say “yes” when presented with the opportunity to be an active member on national or state boards and committees.
