Catholic immigrants from Ireland Adapted to American life after leaving their famine struck country in 1848 by creating their own make shift shelters on the edge of town and desperatly trying to find work, even though they were discriminated against for being Irish. They eventually found work in dangerous feilds such as the raildroads, policemen firefighting and at lumber mills for the men. The women found work as well even though it was odd during that time for women to work, They worked as cooks caretakers and sometimes as factory workers. Through their work they built themselves a good reputation because they were moral and hard working. For the Irish catholics, their church became the center of their social life which provided hospitals, education, activities and social services. By 1900, Catholicism was the largest branch of Christianity in America and the Irish catholics then realized the power they had in the voting booths many of them became politicians and mayors for their cities.
