Create your own Japanese Religion. Create it’s back story, rituals, worldview, and myths. It should be tied to at least 3 themes we encountered in class and should connect to in-class and/or outside readings. It should include an extended critical reflection on the question of religion in Japan. Critical reflection means thinking about the significance of discourses and about what they might tell us about Japanese religions and culture more generally. In other words, critical reflection asks, and attempts to answer, the “so-what question.”
Provide a 300- to 400-word, double-spaced overview of your paper (topic, thesis, evidence you will use). This could be your introductory paragraphs or potentially as a conclusion for the paper.
• Provide a bibliography that includes at least 2 books and 3 articles. Tell us which pages you will use from the book (a range or several ranges of pages is acceptable).
• Provide a one- to two-page outline of your paper in note form, with separate headings for each section (Intro, argument, point one, point two, etc.).
Rubric for Draft:
Overview – 5 points
Use succinct language. Get right to the point.
Tell us what you’re going to argue, what sources you will use, why those sources, and what bigger issue (so what question) you want to engage.
Outline – 10 points
• Provide a one- to two-page outline of your paper in note form, with separate headings for each section (Intro, argument, point one, point two, etc.).
• Looking for the same things as the Overview, but in some more detail. Show us how you will make the argument.
• “First I will outline the issue, using (list relevant sources), to make the following major points…”
• break down each of your major points and show us what sources you will use to argue them. Be as specific as possible. “Following Reader’s argument that #### (p. 34), I will demonstrate that….”
• Make sure that your central argument is clear. If you’re making additional points, make it clear that these are supplementary. Also clarify how they fit in to the larger point you’re making.
Bibliography – 2 points
