The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into law by President Obama in 2010. This law created significant changes to the nation’s health care system. In particular, the law made changes that will affect health care providers, insurance companies, patients, Medicare & Medicaid, and payment policies. Two nursing provisions that will impact my practice of nursing are listed below…
Section 5205 initiates an Allied Health Loan Forgiveness Program to ensure that there is an adequate supply of allied health professionals. This program was created in hopes to eliminate workforce shortages at public health agencies, acute care facilities, ambulatory care facilities, and other underserved health facilities. This is a great incentive for individuals who may have student loans and wish to enter the workforce without worrying about their debts. Also, as more nurses sign up to work for this benefit, it will assist in reducing the workforce shortage.
Section 5310 initiates loan repayments to students that are willing to serve as a faculty member at an accredited nursing school. This provision encourages nurses to become educators while also reducing their student loan debts. Also, if it attracts more nurses, there will be more nurse faculty to educate more students that wish to go to nursing school.
