Instructions for Submitting Photo Narrative

The Photo Narrative is an opportunity to present a story relating to Asian Americans that you feel deserves a public audience and has not been told before. You are to research, create, and share the story using photographs that you personally take and a text-based presentation that pulls together what you have learned through the course. Through the Photo Narrative, you are producing knowledge about Asian America, from your point of view.

Content Requirement: The content of your Photo Narrative must explicitly address the following:

  1. What makes the story you are telling unique and deserving of a public audience?
  2. What about Asian American history do we need to know in order to understand the context of the community and research topic you have chosen to study? Discuss and explain.
  3. What kind of sociological information/data do we need to know in order to understand the context of the community and research topic you have chosen to study? Discuss and explain.
  4. What was the central research question you were trying to answer with your ethnographic study?
  5. What did you learn through your research?
  6. What are the answers to your central research question?
  7. What do you think is significant about your findings for the field of Asian American Studies? Discuss and explain.

Requirements for Submitting the Photo Narrative (Final Version):

  1. The Story: The photo narrative must tell a story about an Asian American community (one that is geographically local to you) that you feel deserves a public audience and has not been told before. You can think about the story you want to tell by seeing if you can answer one of the following questions:
    • Q1: Does your story present a point of view and information that are typically overlooked by the general public or Asian Americans? If so, how?
    • Q2: Does your story present a point of view and information that challenge conventional wisdom (or the prevailing dominant view) and reframe how the general public or Asian Americans should think/feel about something? If so, how?
    • Q3: Does the your story present a point of view and information that the general public or Asian Americans have not considered or do not know about? If so, how?
    • Q4: Does your story present a point of view and information that attempt to influence or affect a set of existing societal conditions? If so, how?
  2. The Photographs: The photo narrative must include 8-12 photographs that you have captioned with information relevant to your story and/or research question(s).
  3. The Interviews: The photo narrative must include interviews with at least TWO individuals who are members (loosely defined) of the Asian American community whose story you are telling.
  4. The Text: The photo narrative must include a written essay that is 1000-1250 words. (Not including Works Cited.)
  5. Using Course Material: The photo narrative must reference at least SIX concepts/ideas/terms/argument/themes/pieces of information from course material, and use MLA formatting and style for parenthetical citations. If outside sources are references, include a Works Cited page to list those. References to course material do not require a bibliographic citation on the Works Cited page.
  6. Format for Submitting:
    • 11 or 12 font size, Times Roman
    • double-spaced
    • photos placed where you want in between text
    • Top of page one should include the following information: Your name, date, title of your photo narrative, zip code in which your community resides, a name of the community whose story you are telling (ex: Koreatown, Little Saigon, Asian American Students at De Anza College). Upload as a .DOC or .DOCX type file.
