Purpose of this Assignment: In composition, cause and effect is a method of essay development in which a writer analyzes the reasons for—and/or the consequences of—an action, condition, event, or decision. In doing so, the writer determines how various phenomena are related. This may be done to inform and/or persuade the audience.

Essential Elements of a Cause & Effect Essay:

• Includes a strong, clear thesis statement that tells the reader right away what causes or effects (or both) you will be focusing on and why – your main point.
• Is written formally rather than informally (no slang, no contractions, professional tone throughout, third-person point of view, no emotive punctuation, etc.).
• Uses either a Focus-on-Effects or a Focus-on-Causes organizational method.
• Uses either chronological order or reverse chronological order.
• Has solid introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs that connect with the thesis and utilize topic sentences to guide the reader.
• Has strong supporting details that persuade your reader that the cause-effect relationship is valid, that a cause is plausible, or that an effect is likely.
• Purpose, tone, and audience are taken into consideration from beginning to end.

• Has appropriate cause-effect transitions and connectors when moving from one idea to another or from one point to another.
• Uses consistent third-person point of view throughout (no “I,” “we,” or “you” should be used).
• Uses consistent verb tense throughout.
• Applies basic rules of grammar, spelling, usage, capitalization, and punctuation.

Cause & Effect Prompts:

• You are allowed to pick your own topic for this essay. Remember, pick a topic that you are interested in and one that you enjoy writing about. If you have difficulty selecting a suitable topic or you are unsure if the topic you have selected is suitable for this essay, please come talk to me in person or email me at cfawcett@una.edu.

Writing Center Requirement:

Students are REQUIRED to schedule a consultation with UNA’s Writing Center for each essay assignment (5 visits total). This includes the Cause & Effect Essay. You are required to visit the Writing Center once for this essay, but feel free to schedule as many meetings with them as you’d like. The more you go, the more your essay will improve. All proofreading of essays should be referred to the Writing Center; I will not proofread, edit, or write comments on your papers before they are due. Do not email me a copy of your essay for revision.

Specific Assignment Details:

• At least 3.5 pages in length, no more than 4.5 pages
• Double-spaced

• 12-point font
• Times New Roman font
• 1-inch margins
• You must use 2 credible outside sources and you must cite them according to the most current MLA style guide. You must correctly include in-text citations with the author’s last name and page number (Example: Harper 231) that correspond to your Works Cited Page.
• Include your last name and the page number at the top right-hand corner of each page

(Example: Jones 1)

• Include a header at the top-left corner of the first page, double-spaced, with: name of author (you), name of instructor (Ms. Fawcett), title and number of course (First-Year Composition I: EN-111-07), and the due date of the essay
• The essay is worth 100 points, plus 10 points for your Cause & Effect Peer Review (Wednesday, March 20^th in class)
