The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a relatively new role in nursing that was created in the last 35 years. CNLs are nursing professionals who have earned a master’s or post-master’s degree in a formal CNL education program. The role of a CNL has received a mixed reception within the nursing community, due to a lack of understanding of the role and its purpose in clinical practice. In addition, there is a lack of understanding between the CNL role and that of other nurse roles such as the clinical nurse specialist, clinical nurse educator and advanced practice registered nurse (Clarifying the clinical nurse, 2017).
The CNL follows a group of patients with a focus on evidence based practice, safety, quality, risk reduction and cost containment. CNLs provide education to many professional groups they work with as they incorporate evidence-based practice and change at the point of care. There are six elements of the CNL role, all of which are connected and need to be mastered: leadership and change, interdisciplinary relationships, knowledge transfer, outcomes management, clinician at the point of care, and professional development (Clarifying the clinical nurse, 2017).
The CNL clinical component causes difficulty with integration of the role. Unlike unit nurses who could be assigned between two to ten patients, the CNLs’ assigned patient load consists of all the patients within a specified unit. While CNLs work at the point at which care is delivered, they do not necessarily provide direct care to their patient group. Their role is not as a direct caregiver, but rather a facilitator of direct care, while working with the clinical staff who is involved in the actual care of the patients (Clarifying the clinical nurse, 2017).
