Disaster recovery is that we recover the system of data in event of some failure which is usually an unexpected failure that we can’t plan for which we are not sure about. Disaster affects the availability of the system. Disaster techniques are designed to help minimize data loss and deal with the availability of the systems over time. Disaster recovery could be days or hours. Disaster recovery plans and techniques are driven by RTO requirements.
IT staff department is responsible for the disaster plan in my company. Some issues like corruption, data errors, and so on are handled as disaster recovery by the IT department in my company. A data Recovery plan is a continuous planning process to use cost-effective controls to prevent possible disruptions and recover the capacity of the organization. A disaster recovery plan is part of a larger business continuity planning process.
Disaster recovery is focused on IT assets which include facilities, hardware, software, people, etc. Now we will discuss the Recovery point objective and Recovery time objective. Recovery point objective is based on acceptable data loss in case of disruption of operations. It is the earliest point in time that is acceptable to recover data. Recovery point objective quantifies the permissible amount of data loss in case of interruption.
On the other hand Recovery time objective is determined based on acceptable downtime if a disruption of operations occurs. Recovery time objective indicates the earliest point in time at which the business operations must resume after a disaster. Both Recovery point objective and Recovery time objective are based on time parameters. Lower the time requirements the higher the cost recovery. There are some additional parameters that need to be defined for recovery strategies.
Interruption window which is the time the organization can wait from point of failure to the restoration. After this time the progressive losses caused by the interruption are unaffordable. Service delivery objective is the level of services to be reached during the alternate process mode until restoration. Maximum tolerable outages represent the most time an organization can support processing an alternate mode. Recovery strategies outline the best way to recover a system in case interruption and is used for guidance to each of the recovery procedures that need to be developed.
A variety of strategies should be developed and all alternatives should be presented to senior management. Senior management should select the most appropriate strategy from the alternatives provided. Strategies will depend on how critical the business processes, cost, time to recover, security.
