Using one of the ideas shared in your peer’s initial post, provide an example of a strategy that you would use to help children develop reasoning or problem solving skills. Make sure to describe how the strategy fits within the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) for the children you would use the strategy with.
According to our text cognitive development is a field of study in neuroscience and psychology focusing on a child’s development in terms of information processing, conceptual resources, perceptual skill, language learning, and other aspects of brain development and cognitive psychology compared to an adult’s point of view. When a child begins to have cognitive progress/development occur their reasoning/problem solving skills are also being developed. For example, Johnny is playing outside, every time he tries to go through the monkey bars he hits his head and hurts himself. Johnny’s cognitive characteristics of learning through experience actives his reasoning/problem solving skills and Johnny no longer tries to go through the monkey bars. When in a social setting Johnny learns that Emma doesn’t like to be pushed and he also gets in trouble with his teacher when he does push her. Johnny’s cognitive development of information processing actives his reasoning skills and stops pushing Emma so they can continue to play and have fun rather than sitting and watching all his friends have fun without him.
Experience, information processing and perceptual skill are the three main cognitive characteristics to help a child develop reasoning and problem solving skills. Multicultural educational centers help a child learn how to respect and understand other cultures that surround them in their everyday life. This helps in problem solving/reasoning skills on a social level and helps the child become knowledgeable about the world around him and the people they interact with on a daily basis.
According to our text, social constructivism is an educational theory of acquiring knowledge which emphasizes the importance of culture and context in and constructing knowledge. ZPD is defined as the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can do with help. According to Vygotsky’s theory and ZPD children develop reasoning and problem solving skills develop through culture understanding and learning how to receive help and be guided. Simply Psychology describes the theory as follows, “Lev Vygotsky views interaction with peers as an effective way of developing skills and strategies.” Meaning the theory and ZPD directly affect the development of skills and strategies in a young child’s life.

It’s important as an educator to ensure multicultural education is alive within your classroom. The best way to do is, is by being respectful of other cultures that may or may not be present in your classroom. I use a resource to help me come up with multicultural activities that are DAP in my toddler classroom. I would also ensure that multicultural books when available in my classroom. This will my students learn to problem solve to be respect of the people and world around them. They may have to learn the hard way at first by making a mistake but the consequences of cultural disrespect will be equal level to the crime. The resource I use for my classroom is as follows:
