There is no easy way to deal with our emotions and other people’s feelings. It is part of the complexity of life. But thinking about where something went right or wrong and then applying that knowledge to future encounters is one way to improve interactions when emotions are “getting in the way.”

In preparation:

  • Review these sections in Chapter 7 of your course text: “Obstacles to Communicating Emotions Effectively,” “Social Media and Emotions,” and “Guidelines for Communicating Emotions Effectively.
  • Consider situations in your own life when emotions became an obstacle to effective communication.

The Assignment:

Write a 3- to 6-page paper describing a situation in which emotions got in the way of effective communication in one of your interpersonal relationships.

As you write about this event, be sure to do the following:

  • Describe the relationship and the specific situation.
  • Describe the emotion that seemed to be in the way in this situation and explain how it affected the communication.
  • Describe how the situation ended. Was it a positive ending? Negative? Were things unresolved?
  • Describe what you would do differently using the guidelines from Chapter 7 in your course text.
  • Include a proper introduction and conclusion
