3 SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS. FIRST QUESTION IS BASED ON THE TRAILER I PROVIDED, BUT YOU HAVE TO DO THE READING TO ANSWER ALL THREE. I attached the word doc. In the REFUSING GAZE EXERPT, she discusses similarities between Queen Thryth in Beowulf and the female heroines in Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol 1, though you will read only her comments on the film. The women in both, she argues, successfully refuse the male gaze through the literal and symbolic use of violence. In addition, in Tarantino’s film the traditional function of the camera as a vehicle for the male gaze is broken by the director’s frequent violation of the ‘fourth wall’ (definition (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and some examples of films that break the fourth wall here (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.). In classic Hollywood cinema, characters never look at the camera directly, maintaining the illusion that an omniscient camera controls the scene and the spectator can look with impunity. When the female characters appear to look directly at the spectator, they “refuse” and challenge the objectifying gaze.

1.View the movie trailer for Mildred Pierce, above. Do you think it accurately represents the film? Why/why not, and if not how might the differences be explained? (VIDEO QUESTION)

2.Do you agree with Jordan that the characters she mentions from Kill Bill successfully “refuse the gaze” in comparison to women in Classic Hollywood films? Or do they remain “spectacles”, beautiful women subject to the admiring gaze of the camera? (READING)

3.Can you think of any other popular film in which female protagonists “refuse the gaze”? Explain, giving examples from the film. (Note: remember according to Jordan it is the spectator’s gaze she should be refusing, not simply another character’s, though this may be part of her “refusal” as well.) (READING)
