Nursing careers take widely divergent paths – practice focus varies by setting, by type of client, by different disease, therapeutic approach or level of rehabilitation. Moreover, nurses are mobile and sophisticated and work in a society that is changing and asymmetrical for consumers. Each state has specific laws pertaining to the profession of nursing.  These laws are in place to protect the citizens of the state.  An article found from the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba gives some literature pertaining to the scope of practice for a nurse. This article states that some of the factors to consider for determining whether identified actions are within the domain of nursing practice would be determining:

Is there a need?

Is it safe?

Is there knowledge and competency?

The American Nurses Association website states: “In the document, Nursing:  Scope and Standards of Practice, scope of practice is defined by the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of nursing practice, including advanced practice nursing.” (Nursing World, n.d., para. 1)  Each of these must be answered in order to validate the actions of nursing practice.  This will ensure there is a need, that it is safe, and that there is substantial knowledge to carry out the practice.
