Essay: Crime Scene Processing
Objective: The objectives for this assignment are to critically examine a crime scene and define the proper
processing procedures. You will also explain the proper collection and preservation of specific physical
evidence. This is not the analytical phase of evidence examination.
Length: 6-7 pages (not including reference pages), typed double spaced using 11 font with 2.5 cm (1 inch)
margins. A title page is not required. Any pages beyond the required seven will not be marked. The
reference page can be single spaced.
Instructions: Your essay is worth 20% of your final grade and will be written on crime scene processing
procedures.
The first section of your essay will explain all the general processing procedures required to appropriately
approach and document a scene prior to exhibit collection. The second section of the essay will focus on
exhibit collection. Referencing primary and secondary sources will be critical to your success in this
assignment.
Images of exhibits found within this investigation are posted on BlackBoard. You will find two files
containing images. From file “A” you will be required to explain how you would collect, preserve and
secure four (4) of these exhibits for possible further examination. From file “B” you will select one (1)
image and explain in detail how you would process this area/evidence.
The essay will be referenced exactly as per the standards within the Journal of Forensic Science. Use
internet sources very carefully and critically (if at all). Peer reviewed journal articles are your best source.
Essay structure, spelling and grammar will be marked. You must include a reference page.
