For this assignment, you will prepare a 3 to 3.5-page epidemiologic research paper on a disease of your choosing. You will describe your findings on the natural history of the disease, the etiology, and population(s) at-risk. More specific information is detailed below.
You must use at least 5 references from peer-reviewed journals or government documents in your paper. Use APA style to cite your references. References do not count towards the page limit. Please use 1.5 spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 font size, and Times Roman style.
Choose a disease (e.g., breast cancer, diabetes, HIV) – and address each of the following headings:
I. Introduction. In this section, please introduce the disease you will focus on and explain why it is important (e.g., is it an epidemic? Does it affect a lot of people? Why is it a concern?)
II. Describe natural history of the disease. For example, is it an infectious or chronic disease? How is it acquired? Is it an acute or chronic disease? What is the incubation period if any? if not an infectious disease, is there a latency period? What are the symptoms? Is there a cure?
III. Descriptive epidemiology. Describe the patterns (distribution) of the disease in terms of persons (e.g., at-risk population). Identify one at-risk community for your diseases. Is this community more burdened than others? Describe disease disparities by gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic advantage, or other community characteristic. If you can find additional information on disparities by immigration status and sexual orientation/identity please include those as well.

IV. Importantly, your determinants cannot individual-level determinants. Remember, individual-level determinants are factors such as gender, age, knowledge, skills, eating habits, exercise, etc. Focus on determinants that are part of people’s physical, social, economic, and policy-level environments. Draw on what we’ve already learned in class, how do social determinants such as peers, socio-economic status, access to resources, social norms, and policies, influence health.
