He had been verbally counseled and issued two previous written warnings. Keiths attitude was very nonchalant toward the Laura when she tried to counsel him regarding his chronic absenteeism and the expectations for improvement in this behavior. Once again Keith called in sick on a very busy day and the staff was very upset because this required the on-call nurse to work overtime to provide coverage. Later that day Laura spoke to the PACU nurse manager at another large hospital in the same town and she told Laura that Keith was working as an agency nurse for her that day. Needless to say Laura was very upset. Laura checked with the human resources department and they told her this was a violation of sick leave policy and the employee could be terminated immediately. When Keith returned to work the next day Laura told him she needed to speak to him in her office. Keiths demeanor was very defensive when he entered the office. When Laura began to explain that Keiths employment was terminated immediately Keith leaped up and began shouting at Laura. He leaned over the desk and said Im going to kill you you *****! Laura tried to calm Keith down but he continued to yell and threaten her. Laura called security; however Keith ran out of the office before they arrived. Keith returned to the PACU shouted that he was going to kill Laura and then left the building. When security officers arrived they told Laura that she must have an armed guard escort her to and from the building and that she could not be the only nurse in the PACU after hours. Laura thought these measures were extreme but agreed to comply with them. Laura later attended a briefing with OR human resources and nursing staff to discuss the issue and plan preventive measures for future events. 1.
