Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is best explained as the intellectually disciplined process where an individual skillfully and actively analyzes, evaluates, and applies collected data and information. In other words, it is a conclusion derived after reasonable and reflective thinking. There are a lot of benefits that come with critical thinking, and equal implications if the information is used without being questioned.
First of all, the application of critical thinking encourages curiosity during research activities. Through curiosity, an individual can gain a deeper understanding of the exact information that is needed for research. Through critical thinking, a person becomes curious regarding a wide range of topics, in the long run developing further interests. Therefore, one can apply thinking habits in every forthcoming situation (Serrat, 2017). The results of such kind of curiosity is always a constructive outcome.
Furthermore, the application of critical thinking is important since it reinforces a person’s ability to solve problems. Such is very important especially to learners and researchers. Through critical thinking, a person devotes patients and commitment to truly understanding a specific problem. This is why critical thinking skills are handy when it comes to solving problems.
Needless to say, independent thinking is one of the main objectives of education. By critically thinking for themselves, students are molded to become independent (Serrat, 2017). Learning and specializing in critical thinking skills is what makes students become great thinkers and more so leaders. These skills equip individuals with the ability to make well-informed decisions. Therefore, critical thinking is not only important to students but every other person.
As a critical thinker and researcher, it is important to question information to determine the credibility and relevance of information. This is because some information may not be accurate or credible to your research. Therefore, one needs to question the source of information, the date when the information was published. And the credibility of the author of the information. Failure to question information comes with a lot of implications.
Based on the provided learning resources, I can employ different techniques to develop my Capstone paper through critical thinking. First, I would study and understand every question from different viewpoints. This way, I shall be able to understand precisely what is expected of me. Also, I would ensure I analyze everything that I see, as it is a crucial strategy for critical thinking. Rather than understanding information for what it is, I would try to understand the deeper meaning of the questions. Furthermore, I would conduct thorough research on the subject to ensure I understand every single concept. If I have disagreements with fellow students regarding the topic under discussion, I will ensure I seek further advice. In the end, I shall be able to tackle the Capstone project courtesy of the application of critical thinking skills.
My writing skills are found to have several strengths and weaknesses. The strengths include but not limited to; My first skill is curiosity. When I meet a person, who knows something I am not aware of, I tend to ask more to try to understand what is this that I don’t know. This has opened ways through which I obtain so much information about the exploration of new information. This interest has also helped me gain new information on how I should handle the new information that is coming across. The second strength skill is the love of reading. The love or reading also equips one with rich and useful information that can be used in exploring new areas in the research being undertaken. This skill is however facilitated by curiosity, which triggers one to seek more information that you do not have at any given time. Comment by Sharon: Do not – in full in academic writing. Comment by Sharon: Good point
The third skill is perseverance. This refers to resistance in trying to give up on matters which tend to make life difficult at any given time. “I work to improve and learn from mistakes, forging ahead a little smarter, wiser, and more skilful.” Most successful people are not the ones who are best in what they do, but the ones who persevere most in the activities which they take part in. submitting to go through difficult situations only to obtain what I am after has played an essential role in ensuring that I remain successful and relevant in what I take part in. Comment by Sharon: This is a great attitude to have! Comment by Sharon: So true!
Though I have several strengths in my skills, weaknesses are also there, and there is a need to look for ways through which they can all be addressed. The first weakness is inadequate and weak transition skills. Any written work which comprises of weak transitions looks choppy and unpolished. I need to look for ways through which the transitions can be done to ensure that scenes of the work addressed unfolds in the required manner. Doing regular writing practicing skills is also essential since it helps in determining common mistakes and ways of minimizing them. Comment by Sharon: Often all you need is a link sentence, to link one point/paragraph to the next.
Another weakness is redundancy and wordiness. I have been suffering the problem of using so many words in trying to describe petty issues. Too much repetition of words results in redundancy which disrupts the flow of information being delivered. The right choice of words is important because it enhances the understanding of the information being discussed. Comment by Sharon: True
