Behaviour change in relation to better health, are basically the efforts an individual puts so as to change personal attitude and habits with the aim of promoting social, physical and mental well-being of a person. The change also aims at preventing diseases as well as controlling their spread. It is not easy for an individual to adopt to behaviour change but there are measures that can be put in place to promote this change for better health. One of the key measures that need to be taken is acknowledging and exploring an individual’s resistance to change. Culture has a great influence in health behaviour. In fact, different cultures are associated with different health practices affecting the usage of health services. Notably from one of our reference videos this week, cultural differences exist between Southeast Asian immigrant community and the American community in regard to medical treatment. The differences are mainly based on the eastern beliefs, their social practices and lack of knowledge and experience with the western health practices. Besides, the Southeast Asian immigrant community have a belief that their medical practitioners cannot be questioned since they regard them as their “gods”. Consequently, this can have a huge impact on the healthcare they receive (WHYY Education, 2010). To promote better health for the eastern community, the American health providers should acknowledge the resistance from their health practices exist, roll with this kind of resistance and educate the immigrant communities on the benefits of the western medicine. They should also encourage them to question the mode of treatment they receive as well as gather the pros and cons of the prescribed treatment. An example of how accepting change has promoted better health is from this week’s video on Singapore. In the video, citizens of Singapore have embraced change (Healthcare Triage, 2014). Another key measure to be taken in order for individuals to promote behaviour change for better health is health education. Under this, individuals are given knowledge on how to maintain their physical, social, environmental, spiritual as well as their sexual and reproductive health. A good example is how WHO is educating people on measures necessary to prevent contracting and spread of Covid-19 (BBC News, 2020). Among the knowledge communicated by WHO is self-monitoring of an individual’s behaviour, whose sole goal is to promote a person’s awareness of the risk behaviour in relation to Covid-19. This has encouraged people worldwide to change their social practices with the aim of promoting better health in terms of preventing the spread of the virus. Additionally, social media has played a great role in health education by providing a platform through which health bodies provide information on proper diet and nutrition (Skolnik, 2021). Information on what kind of foods to be taken when one is suffering from a certain kind of disease is also provided on these platforms. References
