Students will critically analyse leadership theories based on a survey of people working in the
Australian health care system. From this analysis, students will consider leadership in health care
within a wider context, identify the attributes of an effective leader, and may begin to embody these
professional leadership qualities in their workplaces.
Task: Using the interview guide found in Assessments Folder Assessment One, you are
to survey up to five people who are working in health care system. These people
should be a mix of internal people from your specific workplace, other students, and external
people, either in other workplaces in your organisation, the area office or in health-related fields
in industry (e.g., the Department of Health, drug companies, health insurance companies)
2.The survey will obtain qualitative data about what your respondents consider to be the current
challenges in contemporary health care, and what they consider to be important factors for
effective leadership
3.NB Please refer to the ‘ethics guidelines’ document about how to conduct ethical
interviews located in the ‘Assessment One’
4.Briefly analyse and report the results of your survey in relation to contemporary health care
challenges, and your respondents’ three most frequently identified effective leadership factors
5. In your introduction, outline the various sections of your report
6. Briefly discuss the health care challenges identified by your respondents. Support these
challenges with references to relevant literature
7.Outline the three most commonly identified leadership factors, and discuss these in light of your
respondents’ comments, recent literature, set readings and lectures. Indicate whether the
relevant literature supports or refutes the views of your respondents
8. From your analysis, identify and discuss an appropriate leadership style that incorporates the
three leadership factors
9.Discuss how effective leadership, including the identified factors and the specific leadership
theory/style that you identified, can impact on outcomes in contemporary health care settings
10. Draw your report together with a conclusion about effective nursing leadership in contemporary
health care
11. You use a format style when preparing this report. Report style, with
headings/sections
