Life in the fifties
In the 1950s, America confronted difficult political, diplomatic, and social issues.
The economy was booming, the cities and towns were booming and most importantly the baby boom. The starting of the boom began when people sought to build a peaceful and flourishing society.
In the mix of the growth of baby boomers, the movement for the civil and social rights swept the United States.
Rock ’n’ Roll music was becoming a huge traditional type of music and transcontinental/color tv was introduced.
History in the fifties
May 4th, 1950 – Postwar Baby Boom begins as birthrate rises dramatically.
Following WWII, the US experienced a increasing birth rate, averaging 4.24 million new babies to the population.
This generation of “baby boomers” was a result of the Americans feeling confident on being able to support large number of children in their families.
May 4th, 1951 – Beginning of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Alan Freed began playing this style of music and popularized the term to describe the type of music.
October 1951 – Introduction to color system TV’s
RCA demonstrated an all-electronic color tv in late 1951.
By 1955, over three-quarters of a million of the US households owned TV.
1950’s Civil Rights Movement
Brown v. Board of Education ending racial segregation in public schools.
African American pastors and civil right leaders coordinate nonviolent protest against racial discrimination and segregation.
Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act of 57 to help protect voters rights.
Cultural Context
Represented in U/S
During the 1950s, a sense of uniformity encompassed American society.
The Cold Ware was a defining element of the 1950s.
The baby boom and suburban boom went hand in hand – where men were able to buy houses perfect enough for their young families.
Individualistic
Americans are more likely to prioritize themselves over a group and they value independence and autonomy.
Unlike collectivistic cultures, Americans maintain great distances of personal space and keep to themselves from others.
Artistic
Gordon Parks believed photography (art) was a weapon of change awakening hearts and undoing discrimination.
Rock ‘N’ Roll music was the most popular music that evolved from musical styles such ass jump blues, and jazz.
In the 1950’s, dancing was widely varied steps and styling. For example, the jitterbug, the swing or the boogie-woogie.
Values
TV programming had a mass audience appeal and was featuring news and sitcoms.
Americans, post war, would have higher incomes, low cost mortgages and would be able to live in nice homes and uphold the “perfect American household.”
Religion
Attending Christian churches was one-way Americans sensed identity and community.
“Under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance
Churches began to expand and able to accommodate the growing population.
Sex and Gender Roles
Gender roles controlled what people could and couldn’t do by defining things like masculine or feminine.
Both men and women observed strict gender roles and complied with society’s expectations.
Post WWII, large number of returning soldiers came back to the states and married and began having families.
Women were the “helpmates” to their husbands and a full-time mother to their children while men became the sole providers for the family.
Acculturation
The years from post WWII to the end of the 50s were dominated by the birth of the Cold War, the dramatic growth of affluence, the growing anxiety among Americans, and the emergence of the new subversive culture.
“Golden Age”: The increase of economic growth which benefited both workers and capitalists with higher wages.
Staying up to date with new trends in news, government, and music.
Conclusion
The booming prosperity of the 1950s helped to create a widespread of stability, and contentment in the United States after coming from a hard time after WWII.
The economy had a chance to grow and incomes were better, and Americans were able to enjoy nicer things for their families.
