Interest groups play a key role in influencing public opinions on certain social issues.

The objective of the presentation is to dissect the mission, objectives and goals of the National Breast Cancer Coalition interest group.

National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) Overview
For the longest time Breast cancer has remained in the forefront among the most prevalent cancers in women.
NBCC is a non-profit and voluntary organization whose sole purpose is to eradicate breast cancer1.
NBCC aims to attract national attention towards breast cancer by working with advocates for change2.
NBCC informs, supports and directs all the affected individuals .
NBCC works with the media, legislative and other key stakeholders to increase knowledge on breast cancer3.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the world. As a response the National Breast Cancer Coalition was created to fight breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is a non-profit and voluntary organization whose sole purpose is to eradicate breast cancer. NBCC aims to attract national attention towards breast cancer by working with advocates for change. NBCC informs, supports and directs all the individuals affected with breast cancer. Hence, in response NBCC works with the media, legislative and other key stakeholders to increase knowledge on breast cancer.

Mission
The mission of NBCC is to “Eradicate breast cancer through action and advocacy4”.
NBCC also aims to increase federal funding for breast cancer research and to monitor how these funds are disbursed5.
NBCC also aims to expand health care quality for all.
NBCC also aims to ensure that all the trained advocates influence decisions pertaining to breast cancer.
NBCC aims to attain its mission by increasing education and awareness on breast cancer and by advocating for frequent breast cancer screenings in women6.

The mission of the National Breast Cancer Coalition is to eradicate breast cancer through action and advocacy. As part of its legislative agenda NBCC has allocated $150 million to the Breast Cancer Research Program for the Financial year 2019 to increase research on breast cancer. Two, NBCC has proposed a bill to have breast cancer added as a qualifying condition for Medicare coverage. Three, NBCC targests the preservation of the Medicaid breast cancer treatment program.

Mechanisms Used to Engage, Attract and Influence Policy Makers
Through advocacy, where NBCC engages its policy makers by offering education and training programs that are formulated with information, tools and skills related to its course15.
By offering the right resources and education where NBCC creates and offers free resources to the public which helps to increase knowledge on prominent breast cancer treatments hence influencing policy makers16.
By training its advocates on the science behind breast cancer to help them effectively analyze breast cancer research and to effect the decisions made on breast cancer17.
