A Reflection of The Forms of Free Unpaid Labor
Humanities
In 1750, Gottlieb Mittelberger described indentured servants’ experience crossing the Atlantic as a “terrible misery” where they not only want for provisions, but must survive the “stench fumes, horrer, vomiting” and constant fear of death. He goes further to outline the misfortunes those that survive the journey must endure as the “sale of human beings” commenced.
Based on the readings for the article as upload file, compare Mittelberger’s descriptions of indentured servitude with Equiano’s description of slavery in the eighteenth century (1700s). Were all forms of unfree labor equal? Think about the living conditions, racial hierarchies, and labor outlined in Give Me Liberty. In your response, incorporate textbook readings and the two primary sources to support your argument.
Remember to introduce (who, what, where, when, why) the author and audience of that source. Pay attention to when the source was written to ensure you are analyzing a primary source from the eighteenth century (1700s). Bring in historical context from Give Me Liberty readings to support your primary source analysis.
Make sure to underline your thesis statement. After completing the reading, this should take an hour to write up.
