Analitical essay about the short story Sunny’s Blues by James Baldwin

Paper 2: Applying a Critical Approach
Although you probably won’t be applying it to literature, analysis is an important skill to cultivate . For this paper, I’m asking you to do a specific type of analysis–pick a lens/focus point and apply it to your topic.
Write a 3-5 page paper in which you apply a critical approach (ch 49) to a piece of literature from your textbook (I don’t recommend reader response). It doesn’t have to be something we’ve read for class, but make sure you read it now with fresh eyes. The Theme Index (1968) might help you find a work you’re interested in. If you’re stuck for a paper idea, just write down a work of literature you like and an interesting-sounding style of criticism and see what ideas you can generate about the two. While you have to apply a critical lens, you are not expected to create a new/original analysis of a work. You can use A Doll’s House again, but only if you use an approach other than feminism (Paper 1).
Use 2-3 academic/reliable books or journal articles as secondary sources to support your analysis of the chosen work. Your sources can include material that both supports your analysis as well as providing you the tools to perform the analysis. This means your Works Cited page must include at least 3-4 resources. You will lose 5 points for each resource you are short of 3 or over 4.
Be sure you have a strong, argumentative thesis and support your claims using the text. Pay attention to formal essay structure and paragraph coherence. Chs 42-48 cover writing issues. You can also use the Table of Contents for ideas about textual elements. For example, there are chapters about voice, word choice, and imagery. In ch 15 (voice) specific sections cover tone, speaker, and irony. I might realize the dramatic irony in the text I’m analyzing and work that into a gender analysis.
This is formal writing, so don’t use “I.” Don’t forget you can get help from me or someone/where else if you need it. Use your textbook, Canvas, and our Diigo site as resources to help write. Use the writing process to develop a thoughtful, well-edited final draft.
Research tips
Make sure you don’t let your sources take over your paper. Your resources support your thesis: they aren’t your purpose. That means that if you only use one outside source in each paragraph, you’re getting off topic. The paper should be driven by your mps, not by what information you want to include from sources. You will often see 2-3 different research resources in each body paragraph.
Use your textbook for guidance. Don’t forget to get help from me or any of the other sources around campus. Do not skip any steps in the research process:
Plan ahead and schedule your time
Get the full citation from the sources and the page number for all information
Use “reliable” resources
Never forget your Works Cited page
If you want some web resources about writing, research, etc, you can find some research links on the Diigo page. I’ve linked the “researching” tag here, but you’re not limited to those choices.
Paper length: 3-5 pages, MLA style (that means from 2.5 pages to the last line of 5)
Draft due: Mon Oct 14th (If you bring an electronic copy, be willing to share your device. We’ll work on this during class.)
Final due: Mon Oct 21st (If you turn in an electronic copy, don’t forget to send it as an attached document. If it’s a printed copy, don’t forget to include a copy of the rubric.)
Grading
Your rubric is posted in Canvas. Refer to it for grading standards–this can also be a useful tool as you revise your paper.
When I return your graded assignment, rememeber you are responsible for looking over the comments, understanding them, and applying them to your future writing.
Sample
For Paper 1, an option was to argue the play was feminist–answering that would have applied the gender approach to the play. Main points might have included Nora’s deficient education, attitudes about the role/place of married women, and laws about divorce and children. For Paper 2, I have to include outside sources. I have two probable options. I could look up cultural information from the time period, or I could look up gender analyses of the play. Since A Doll’s House famous, I might start with the critiques (where someone else did the leg work for cultural information).
