Chapter 2 (Planning the Website)
For both assignments this week, you’ve been hired by a new microbrewery to help them build their website (which you’ll do in Assignment #2). The first step though is to complete a competitive review.
Chapter 2 provides an excellent recommendation for creating an Online Marketing Collateral Creative Brief. Using the questions they provide on page 29, perform a competitive review. They recommend looking at three of the best and two of the worst sites; however that might be a little over-kill for this assignment.
- Using the questions on page 29, analyze a “good” competitive microbrewery website (NOTE: It doesn’t have to be in the Detroit area). After you answer the questions, please explain why you believe it’s a “good” example. Remember my rule about opinions “your opinion also has to be based on strategic rationale and facts. In other words, if you state “in my opinion, the sky is purple” just because you use “in my opinion” does not mean that it’s true.”
- Using the same instructions for part 1, analyze a “bad” competitive microbrewery website.
NOTE: Please do not just list the assets for each part. I am looking for an analysis of each element. For instance, don’t just tell me that they have a link to social media. You’d explain where the links are and if they are appropriate. This needs to be done for each of the question.

Chapter 3 (Building the Website)
Now that you’ve completed a competitive review for your client in Assignment #1 (which means you’ll want to complete Assignment #1 first), next you’ll help them build their website. Remember, your client is a new microbrewery that has hired you. This means you are building a brand new website for your client, not starting with an existing site. Use what you learned from Assignment #1 to use the best and avoid the worst.
- Develop a website map. Explain each component of the site and what should be included.
- Develop an inventory list of assets you recommend the client put together. (assets are referred to in the chapter)
- Create a call to action that should be used on the website.
- Going back to Chapter 2, please explain how you will incorporate the 5 components of a successful site. Please be very specific in your recommendations.
create a wireframe of the website homepage. This does not have to be high tech. Please see Chapter 3 for more details on wireframes.
PART 3
Provide a 250+ word discussion of one or more of the key topics raised during the week that intrigued you, surprised you or had the most relevance to you either as an employee or as a consumer. Please note that your Lessons Learned Summary shouldn’t be an outline or re-cap of all of the chapter contents – but instead should reflect more in-depth thoughts about just a few of the key topics that resonated the most with you. You will receive most credit when you are able to show that you’ve been able to internalize the weekly topics and demonstrate your understanding through connection beyond the week’s discussion.
