Unit 3 Learning Objectives

  • Define money and explain its three basic functions.
  • Define money supply and explain how to measure it.
  • Define a fractional reserve banking system and explain how this system creates money using the concept of the deposit/money multiplier.
  • Explain the primary functions of central banks.
  • Describe the structure of the Federal Reserve System.
  • Identify and explain the tools of monetary policy.
  • Recall and contrast the concept of bond and stock.
  • Analyze the money market using supply and demand analysis and plots.

In this unit, you have learned about the bond market, the money market, and how changes in the markets affect the economy. Look for data from FRED that can be used to show some result you learned from this unit. More specifically, from FRED, find two or three indicators that are related to the result you want to demonstrate. Make a graph of these indicators, and write a short description of what you see from the graph. (The point of this exercise is to use real world data from FRED to demonstrate results from economic theory.)

Then:

(1) Post the graph (or a link to FRED pointing to the graph) and your description in “Unit 3 Activity” discussion forum.

(2) Respond to at least two of your classmates’ post by reviewing their graphs and then describe what you see from the graphs. Compare your description with that of your classmates’. It is likely that you do not interpret the same graph the exact same way. Learn from the differences.
