1. Go to the University of Utah Learning Genetics Science Center on isolating DNA at this website and follow the instructions.
2. When you are finished, you should write up an official lab report (Title, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods – be specific, Results, Discussion–including why this lab was important and what you got out of it, and References). Please let me know if you have any questions on writing the lab report.
This lab by itself isn’t really an experiment and doesn’t give you very much for results- as you are simply isolating DNA in a simulation. You could make this more interesting by actually isolating DNA at home. There are many recipes online and you may have all the ingredients at your house. To make a really good experiment, you could change a variable (such as type of alcohol or type of food) and do multiple DNA extractions. This is not required but would make the report easier to write because you would have actual data from an actual experiment.
