Suppose you are a manager who is faced with having to reduce headcount (layoff one of your two employees) in your unit. Sales within the company have declined due to the downward spiral of the economy each department within the organization is faced with making the same decision. Fortunately, you only have to cut one job; others are reducing more.
Mary is in her mid-20s, single, college graduate, she is very hard working and was in the top 10% of the performance ratings this year, she constantly volunteers to travel, work weekends and evenings. However, she supports political causes that could be viewed as contrary to the goals of the company.
Alice is in her mid-40s, has two young children, her husband is a doctor, her performance is good, and she has above average performance reviews. However, she has limited availability on weekends and limitations onovernight travel due to her volunteer work with local charities.
- As a manager who would you select to layoff and why?
- What other factors can be used to decide who gets laid off in organizations?
- How should an organization choose between a decision that is legal and in the best financial interests of the organization, but which could be viewed as unethical?
PLEASE RESPOND TO CLASSMATE DISCUSSION WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT & A DETAILED WHY: As a manager who would you select to layoff and why? – The person that I would layoff is Alice. I understand that Alice has two kids, but her husband is a Doctor who probably makes good money. Which means she will have financial support and that she will still be able to handle the bills. Alice also has the kids, which she can spend more time with them as well as spend more time with her volunteer work if she chooses. As well as take time to find another job if she like. Mary is more qualified because she is very hard working and was in the top 10% of the performance ratings, constantly volunteers to travel, work weekends and evenings. She is young and is able to grow along with the company and able to bring in good ideas that will help attract the youth. Along with she is probably more experience with computers.
What other factors can be used to decide who gets laid off in organizations? – Factors that can be used to decide who gets laid off in the organization are experience, seniority, skills, how the act with the co-workers as well as clients and employee file whether if there is any disciplinary or performance concerns.
How should an organization choose between a decision that is legal and in the best financial interests of the organization, but which could be viewed as unethical? – There should be a formal meeting held and all things that could go wrong need to be laid out and though about carefully. If its not in the best interest for the company then it should not happen.
