The Family Resilience Framework is a fascinating concept.   I have often wondered about an individual’s resilience, where does it come from, what other qualities are involved in resilience?  This is helpful in promoting strategies for families going through life’s challenges (Edelman, Mandle, & Kudzma, 2014, p. 181).   

 

What makes some families come through adversity stronger and others come through completely shattered?  Studies showed that most abused children do not grow up to be abusive.  At first researchers believed the resilience was innate, later they moved toward the recognition of nature vs nurture, yet negating the influence of family and focusing on the individual.  As research continued on this path, a wide range of adversity was studied such as growing up in impoverished circumstances, chronic medical conditions, catastrophic life experiences, trauma, and loss.  Studies emerged of resilient individuals showing the importance of relationships of kin, intimate partners, and mentors who supported their efforts, believed in them, and encouraged them to make the most out of their lives (Walsh, 2003, p. 2).  Walsh’s findings showed that despite childhood challenges, everyone has potential to develop resilience. 

 

It mentioned, with family structure being so complex, it is required innovative strategies for success (Edelman et al., 2014, p. 181).  I know this first hand, as an empty nester, turned mother with now young children, we are living in a situation that is not unique in today’s world.  Grandparents raising grandchildren, I would appreciate sitting with a counselor or nurse and using the Family Resilience Framework to restructure our thinking and provide valuable insight.  “What matters most in dealing with adversity are effective family processes, involving the quality of caring committed relationships” (Walsh, 2003, p. 5).

Cannabis Sativa can be traced to the Asia continent in China since 1500 BC. The cannabis seeds were used in making animal feeds, oil-based paints and fiber used to make ropes. Fedorova (2017) stated that cannabis can be used for medicinal purposes like treating cancer and posttraumatic stress disorder. Cannabis is an anti-epileptic drug. Cannabis causes lung problems to the users for it contains caffeine components in it. Persons taking it are known to have decreased in memory.

Who are the stakeholders both in support of and in opposition to medicinal cannabis use? 

Government, security apparatus, health professionals, and human activists are the stakeholders supporting or opposing medicinal cannabis use. Those in support the use say it has no addictive levels when used in small amounts. Those against say that the use exposes the users to severe conditions like lung cancer. Cannabis can be used in managing pain while those opposing says it will be abused in large quantities and frequently leading to addiction (Fedorova, 2017).

What does current medical/nursing research say regarding the increasing use of medicinal cannabis. 

Marijuana has shown positive effects in eliminating pain and in cancer management. According to Fedorova (2017), patients with severe pain record reduced pain for a long time after using marijuana. Use of cannabis eliminates cancer patient’s experience depression, loss of appetite, insomnia, vomiting and nausea and all this. The drug is administered in chemotherapy session as a means to boost appetite, eliminate depression or make persons have a normal sleep.

What are the policy and future practice implications based on the current prescribed rate of cannabis?

Laws and regulations will be passed and adopted by governments and global health organization. The laws and regulations will encourage the industrial use of marijuana to make drugs. Accordinh to Fedorova (2017), the laws and regulations on marijuana use will ensure there is an increase in revenue, decrease in the misuse of the drug and elimination of black market. Given that cannabis drugs will be over the counter safe consumption of cannabis will be achieved.

Family structure involves different roles and relationships. The basic characteristic of a family system includes: internal and external boundaries, rules with other family members, family organization, distribution of power among the family members, and how the family communicates (Edelman & Mandle, 2010). The characteristics of the family structure when a divorce or a remarriage take place can have certain impacts on family members good or bad.

 

When a mom, or dad, or a married couple decide to get divorced and remarry, this transition affects the one getting remarried, the stepparent, and the child or children. There are several adjustments and changes that need to be made when there is a divorce, or remarriage, and when kids are involved and other children from the stepparent. Boundaries need to be placed into effect in order to have a stable family life.

 

In some experiences I have encountered throughout my life, usually the children do not react well with having another parent figure in their lives, and that the step parent has a hard time adjusting to the new step mother or father role. Then there is a high possible both sides have children so then the step children have to make adjustments as well and work on communication.  We as nurses need to be aware that patients come from different family backgrounds.
