Graphics and/or statistics may be used to misrepresent data in several areas of industry. There are misrepresentations in the areas of sales, medical research, insurance, even when buying a house. The more a person thinks about it there can technically be misrepresented data in any area graphics and statistics are used. There are two different ways data can be misrepresented and that is intentionally and unintentionally. Many companies out there do this intentionally in order to receive a consumers business. Sales companies when trying to get a consumers business will show him/her the parts of the graph and statistics that make the company themselves look good which makes the consumer want to use them. Such as how many they sold of said product over the last three months. What they don’t show is the entire graph which will most likely not make them look very appealing. For example, the last three months was the company’s busiest time of year. If the company showed the consumer the entire graph for the year then the consumer may decide to go elsewhere. When this type of misrepresentation occurs it is called a personal bias by the company. An unintentional misrepresentation of the data would be human error. Human error or accidental bias can occur when collecting the data. Such as there can be a misrepresentation of the sample that was used to collect the data. Misrepresentation in this case would happen if a specific sampling of a population was being used for a study but, not all persons within said sample was able to have data collected from him/her this would create a misrepresentation (Utts,).

Misrepresentations whether intentional or unintentional have been done in politics, medical research, advertising, sales companies, even the media. People in these areas sometimes bend the truth so to speak by leaving out specific details, showing incomplete graphs and statistics in order to make the people want to either vote for them, or buy what their selling.

End-of-life care becomes an issue at some point for elderly clients. Even with the emergence of palliative care programs and hospice programs, the majority of elderly people do not die in their own home as is their preference. What are the reasons for this trend? Discuss what you can do as a nurse to support your clients in end-of-life care and in supporting their desires. Support your response with evidence-based literature.

Most people consider home deaths as an outcome of high quality palliative care. The view of the home as the optimal place to die has been challenged, with the establishment of palliative care in hospitals, nursing homes, hospices and other in-patient facilities. Most patients wants die with the presence of their loved ones and be able to enjoy the last few moments with them. For many, not being able to die at home could therefore be seen as a failure in the care given to these patients, even if the patient was actually admitted to e.g. a hospital or hospice for perfectly valid reasons and in accordance with the patient’s wishes. There are many more reasons why most elderly patients prefer to die at home. With the emergence of home health care team, it encourages medical care to be continued at home while enhancing patient’s quality of life with their loved one. According to the article “Where do elderly patient’s prefer to die”, failure to provided death at home was mostly due to a prolonged terminal phase leading to emotional and physical exhaustion in the patient or the family (Groth-Juncker A., 2015).

In accordance to the American Nurses Association(ANA) statement position, it is the nurses duty to provide comprehensive and compassionate end-of-life care . Nurses are obligated to provide care that includes the promotion of comfort, relief of pain and other symptoms, and support for patients, families, and others close to the patient. Throughout this position statement, the term “family” includes those linked by biology or affection; family is whomever the patient says it is (ANA, 2016). In addition, it is also the nurses responsibility to discuss with the physician the patient’s wishes and incorporate social worker and pastoral care.

I currently work in Medical Surgical Oncology unit where I deal with death and dying quite often. There are many cancer patients who wants to die at home rather than at the hospitals, reason being they want to spend their last few days with their family. Most of these patients were offered hospice care, palliative or home health. Although the patient choses one of these care continuum care, it is possible to have it continued at home and they don’t have to stay at the hospital unless they do not have any family, home or anyone whom they can spend their last few moments with.

1-What are the reasons for elderly patients not dying at home as they desire?

Poor communication leading to unwanted care, increase in repeat hospitalizations, increase in late transitions, increase in ICU usage, fee-for-service care attracting financial gain, family members wanting interventions, medicare rules not allowing reimbursement for both skilled nursing facility care and hospice care.

2-Interventions/ activities/ referrals to support your clients in end-of-life care and in supporting their desires

Physicians, patients and the families should discuss end of life option and develop a plan early, Patients should complete an advanced directive and living will clearly stating their end of life choices, Patients should assign a health surrogate that is aware of their wishes, health care facilities need reform, medicare needs reform, patients need earlier referrals to hospice.

3-Evidence-based literature you used?

Statistics, graphics, and database are used in medical field to prove, or disapprove theories, analysis, and interpretation of ailments, medication, and how it impacts one’s treatment and its effectiveness. However, this data can be easily misinterpreted when and where there is a vested interest. Individual opinions are generalized mainly without considering the whole aspects of an issue, and therefore forming a biased opinion.

Data can be misguiding if the example of the case study is not done properly. A random selection without background knowledge or without specified criteria leads to misinterpretation of the data. Another cause of misinterpretation is difference in origin and association. For example, variables after another but one variable does not cause another. One of the manipulated areas in medical world is pharmacy. Pharmaceutical companies use misguided data in competitive markets. Generic medicines for same purposes are branded out and to advertise it misguiding database is used. The most important thing to be considered while interpreting or predicting an outcome of a statistical analysis is a well-balanced and well selected population. Samples is to be selected considering different aspects of the problem so that the result will not be biased. This demands the proper understanding of the statistical tools and how to select the sample population. However, the sample size should be sufficiently large enough to get into more definite conclusions to prove or disapprove such theories, and analysis of the information needed.
