Re:Topic 2 DQ 1

According to Grove, Gray, & Burns (2015) “Qualitative research is a systematic approach used to describe experiences and situations from the perspective of the person in the situation. “(Grove & Burns, 2015, p. 68). Qualitative research contains authentic personal descriptions of experiences used to provide a more thorough understanding of a circumstance or situation.  The relationship cultivated between the researcher and the participant flourishes during the interviewing process which then develops a deeper understanding and expands the value of the research as the foundation of evidence-based practice.

The avalanche of words culminated during a qualitative study during planning, organizing, collecting, managing, storing, retrieving, analyzing, and writing if not organized systematically and managed efficiently can cause a study to crumble.  One way to systematically and efficiently manage the mass amounts of words involved in a qualitative research project is to use a structured database program to track and organize data.  This approach is known as semi-quantitative coding and analysis of qualitative information.

According to a study done by Johnson, Dunlap & Benoit (2010) Qualitative research and the abundance of words it creates can be managed by “recent advances in computer technology and software have made it possible to manage these mountains of words more efficiently. Organizing large qualitative projects and routinely manage the data flow into a comprehensive database to make a subsequent analysis of the data as efficient as possible.” (Johnson, Dunlap, & Benoit, 2010).

Semi-quantitative includes taking certain segments of text which “is partially converted from textual data into assigned numbers or variables that can be counted and employed like quantitative data sets. The structured qualitative research reported here has generated a coding system that permits individual interview responses to be converted into numeric codes for subsequent quantitative analysis.”(Johnson et al., 2010).

The basis of having a successful qualitative research study is to stay organized.  If you use a computer generated database program to accomplish this or another organizational system to accomplish this, it does not matter the main point is to initiate a plan right from the start of the research.  Be organized right from the beginning and have a plan already laid out on how you will manage the vast amount of incoming information.

2023 Nursing System Security and Ease of Use

For ethical legal and business reasons the security of health care data must 2023

For ethical, legal, and business reasons, the security of health care data must be a top priority in health care organizations. HIPAA, for example, requires that health care organizations safeguard patient data, and there are serious consequences for breaches of privacy. Yet organizations have many types of sensitive clinical or administrative information they need to protect. To make their systems secure, health care organizations put in place policies as well as technical safeguards such as encryption and passwords. There can be a tradeoff, however, between system security and ease of use by health care providers.

Prepare for this Application Assignment as follows:

  • Select a type of health care organization, such as an outpatient clinic, nursing home, or hospital, and a specific department or function in this setting, such as a nursing unit, radiology department, or admissions, that would make use of sensitive health data. Bring to mind specific ways in which these data might be improperly accessed, lost, stolen, and so on.
  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, and conduct online research, as needed, to clarify for yourself the ramifications for individuals and organizations of security breaches in this department, and the solutions that have been devised to protect these data. In what ways might these security measures interfere with the staff’s ease of use of the system? Consider how best to balance these competing interests of data security and convenience for staff.

Then write a 2-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe key challenges for your selected health care department in ensuring that its sensitive data are secure. Illustrate with specific examples, and address not only technological issues but also human factors involved in ensuring its system security.
  • What are some implications of security breaches of its health care data? Who might be impacted and how?
  • Summarize security measures that might be taken as well as their potential impact on the staff’s ease of use of the information system.
  • Explain what you believe is the appropriate balance between data security and ease of use.

This Application Assignment is due bymidnightof 12/07/2014.
Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Refer to theEssential Guide to APA Style for Ashford Students to ensure your in-text citations and reference list are correct.
