My assignment in Unit five was on Florence Nightingale s Environmental Theory and the more I read about her the more 2023

My assignment, in Unit five, was on Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory and the more I read about her the more of hero she becomes to me.  She speaks to my advanced nursing practice because she has brought so much to the field of nursing in a time where women did not have a lot of influence or power.  When I read about the 13 Cannons of the Environmental Model of Nursing, I can see every one of them still presently practiced in nursing (Butts & Rich, 2013, p. 427).  Nursing is so much more than treating the sickness, it is about treating the person holistically (Arnstein, 1956, p. 542). When I assess my patients as a nurse I am looking not just at their disease I am looking at their diet, their, history, their labs and tests and if they are alert and oriented.  I see that Florence Nightingale did just that in a time nursing diagnosis did not exist. When she went to Turkey to help care for the troops during the Crimean War, I can’t help but wonder, if she had any idea of what her change in that hospital would do for the future of nursing.  From the notes she took, during that time, she publish a book that was filled with statistics, graphs, and data on the improvements from her work that enabled changes in military hospitals, Barracks, and initiated the start of a military medical school (Whyte, 2010, p. 20).  If I could model my advanced nursing practice after the example Florence Nightingale, than I think I will do well in the next phase of my nursing career.

Re:Topic 5 DQ 2

When it comes to spiritual care for people with different worldviews than my own, my strengths would be open mindedness and willingness to learn. I do not know a lot about some religions, but am always open to learning and assisting in any way possible. My weakness would be my lack of knowledge. No one can know everything, the key to looking like a genius is knowing where to find resources. Being open minded and willing to take the time to look up the information that I need is a strength within that weakness.

The patient alwyas has the final say in their care. Anyone can refuse care for any reason, so it is up to the health care provider to supply all the information necessary for patients to make informed decisions. The patient is the only one who can decide if something fits within their ethical requirements, and should taken the information given to make the best decision for themselves that they can make.

Part I: Interview

Select a patient, a family member, or a friend to interview. Be sure to focus on the interviewee’s experience as a patient, regardless of whom you choose to interview.

Review The Joint Commission resource found in topic materials, which provides some guidelines for creating spiritual assessment tools for evaluating the spiritual needs of patients. Using this resource and any other guidelines/examples that you can find, create your own tool for assessing the spiritual needs of patients.

  2. Were there any barriers or challenges that inhibited your ability to complete the assessment tool? How would you address these in the future or change your assessment to better address these challenges?
  3. How can this tool assist you in providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of your patient?
  4. Did you discover that illness and stress amplified the spiritual concern and needs of your interviewee? Explain your answer with examples.
