By the due date assigned attach the rough draft of your essay as a Microsoft Word document 2023

By the due date assigned, attach the rough draft of your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area. By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmate’s submissions using the peer review questions provided below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your instructor will assign 3-5 short stories for the class to read and discuss this week. Check the Week 4 Announcement for a list of the assigned stories. You must choose one of these stories to earn credit on the assignment.

Compose an analytical essay of at least 1,200 words in which you offer an interpretation of a literary element in one of the assigned short stories. Write your analysis focusing on one of the following elements in one of the assigned stories:

  • Character
  • Theme
  • Symbolism
  • Imagery
  • Setting

Start by selecting one of the short stories assigned by your instructor. Brainstorm to identify the literary element that you would like to explore in the story. Choose from character, theme, symbolism, imagery, or setting. Then, develop a thesis that offers a specific interpretation of this element. If you have trouble coming up with a thesis, contact your instructor, who will help you. Do not do any outside research at this point. When finished, the draft should be at least 1,200 words (approximately four double-spaced pages).

Tips for the Essay

  1. Open your introduction with an engaging opener, such as a question, quote from the story, or interesting idea. Then, connect to the short story and mention the title and the author. End your introduction with a thesis statement that interprets one literary element of the story (such as theme, symbolism, or characterization).
  2. The body paragraphs should support your thesis. Present specific aspects of the short story that help to illustrate your points. Make sure to quote from the story and analyze specific lines that support your argument.
  3. Include a strong concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points and explains the significance of the thesis.

APA Reminder

Use APA style for formatting the essay and for source citations. Begin with a title page. Include a running header, and use proper font and spacing. End with a separate references page. Refer to the Week 1 lecture on avoiding plagiarism for an APA essay template and additional resources.

Discussion Question 1

SJ is a sixteen-month-old boy who is brought to the clinic with a one-day history of tugging at his right ear and crying and a two-day history of decreased appetite, decreased playfulness, and difficulty sleeping. His mother has documented a fever, so she has been giving him 5 mL of ibuprofen every twelve hours. He was diagnosed with acute otitis media (AOM) at the age of four months; he has had the same diagnosis three times since. On physical exam, his vital signs are normal with the exception of a temperature of 102°F. His weight is 10 kg. Both tympanic membranes (TMs) are erythematous, with the right one more than the left one. The right TM is bulging with limited mobility, copious cerumen, and purulent fluid behind the TM. The left TM appears normal. The right TM landmarks are difficult to visualize. Answer the following questions:

  • Of the information provided, what data support the diagnosis of AOM and what would be inconclusive?
  • How would you distinguish AOM and otitis media with effusion (OME)?
  • What treatment would you suggest?
  • What types of cautions or instructions would you provide to his mother?

Discussion Question 2

Administration of ophthalmological medications requires some explanation. What are the important points that you would review with a patient when teaching how to instill ophthalmic drops and when teaching how to instill ointment? What are the differences you would need to consider if the patient was a child or if the patient is a geriatric patient? Search the literature to see whether you are able to locate any guidelines to support this teaching.

An Ohio State University study found that fewer than a third of nurses surveyed had health care mentors that 2023

An Ohio State University study found that fewer than a third of nurses surveyed had health care mentors that were available to help them learn about evidenced-based practices. It is imperative that new nurses need to be partnered with model mentors that are dedicated to seeking out current research. Established nurse leaders need to make more time to seek out current research and communicate when change needs to be made. A way to change this would be to have nurses review a procedure or current concern each quarter for their floor and see how they are rating.  Complacency tends to happen when there is no plan.

Another barrier that was identified in this same study was that nurses may stick to the tradition or previous teaching that they received when they were originally educated. New nurses who have received more up-to-date evidenced based training in school, may be up against nursing tradition when they come to the workplace.  These nurses may not be allowed or encouraged to implement this new evidence based practice and be orientated to the organization’s old policies and procedures (Nursing Times, 2012). A great way to tackle this is to survey new nurses throughout orientation and ask them if they were taught with different technique.  Once discrepancies are identified, the nurse manager could begin looking into the EBP for that concern.
