“The purpose of the School of Social Welfare is to prepare students for work in professional social work practice in the public and non-profit sectors of health and social welfare. The School’s educational process enables students to identify and analyze the nature and extent of oppression and engage in social work practice that affirms peoples’ strengths as a means of creating social change in their lives and in society. The School stresses a commitment to the values of human and cultural diversity, human dignity, social and economic justice, and individual and group self-determination.” To assist us in evaluating your qualifications, you must submit a personal essay. This essay is an important component of your application. We assess your understanding of the profession, our mission and your readiness for graduate social work education through the manner with which you address the identified issues and your use of examples that illustrate your points. Although you may include any information that you believe is pertinent to your application, please be sure to discuss the following areas.
Each of the sections should be clearly numbered. Please limit your essay to 3-5 double spaced typewritten pages.
- Please discuss and reflect on your understanding of social and economic justice, social change and social welfare issues. Include relevant and specific examples of how your work, volunteer activities and/or life experiences support your response.
- People choose the profession of social work for many reasons. These often include personal experiences, awareness or insights into the existence of inequality or social injustice, and influences from family or community members, etc. Provide specific examples that have influenced your choice of social work as an educational and professional goal.
- Discuss the area of social work that you may wish to pursue in the future and the impact you wish to have through your work.
- Getting into a graduate school for social work often requires a biographical essay that lets the school know why you want to work in the field. This essay is your introduction to the dean and admissions committee and you want to stand out. The letter, sometimes called a personal statement essay, is part of an admissions packet that usually includes personal references and transcripts.

My personal experiences and some key points
I have experience inequality and injustice growing up as a kid in the Caribbean till now.Not given the opportunities like others due to learning differences that results from slow process of information, difficulty focusing and being easily distracted. I was ridiculed and called names like “dummy”, “stupid” and “slow poke” by family and even educators. I have observed the disabled being abused and undermined up till now. I have somewhat rise about this and would eventually like to give back especially to the less fortunate in the disabled community who does not have a voice. I want to be a well rounded and educated advocate to members of the disable
- Educators and caregivers need to be aware of the differences in each individual. Their learning patterns and styles. Their socioeconomic background which may be influenced by the family and the community.
- Educators and caregivers need to be aware of the different tools available to accommodate each individual needs whether learning, physical or developmental disabilities.
- Educators and caregivers need to continue to utilize the ongoing information available to help them better serve members of the disabled community.
Based on the 4 questions about, I want this essay to “Make a statement” to the Dean and admissions committee of the college as to why he/she should give me an opportunity to gain acceptance into the MSW program.
